Ooo...ingatkan Jho Low to singkatan baru untuk J.Lo rupanya bukan...

Saya baca blog Kadir Jasin baru la dapat 'put the pieces together'.

MALAY FIRST - BEING MALAYSIAN IS GIVEN

Menteri Nazri made a bold proclamation at the closure of his response to Awang Selamat open letter to him published in Utusan Malaysia few days ago. He stated that he is Malaysian first and Malay second.

This question on whether we are Malay first or Chinese first, Indian first bla, bla, bla had never crossed my mind until this concept of 1 Malaysia came about. To me i'm simply a Muslim, a Malay and Malaysian.

On one unfortunate day, Lim Kit Siang asked our Deputy Prime Minister whether he is Malay or Malaysian first. Our DPM provided his answer - he's a Malay first. The DPM response became an issue and a matter which many Malaysian dwelt upon. And the question whether you choose your race first or your country first became unhealthily very popular.

To me if i'm to choose i will say i'm Malay first Malaysian second. It's just natural for me to say this. My two cents thought on choosing Malay first because Malaysia came about from Tanah Melayu. Its the Malays that make up Tanah Melayu. We became Malaysia for the reasons that we all know.

Being Malay first doesn't mean Malaysia is second to me. To me its a form of identification of myself as a human living in this world. I am a Malay. We have many Malays around the world i.e. Singaporean Malays, African Malays, Cambodian Malays etc. and i'm one of them. But it doesn't mean that i prioritize them over Malaysia. For example, if one day the Singaporean Malays declare war on Malaysia, i will fight them till the end. As of a matter of fact i will fight any race of the world over Malaysia. I will fight Malaysians too if they betrayed Malaysia!

So this question on whether you are Malay first or Malaysian first is a silly silly one. This one is a probe that will bring Malaysia closer to the ruin. So ignore this one guys. We love Malaysia and we love our race, case closed!

Anyway, i do want to share this piece - http://saga-merah.blogspot.com/2010/09/malay-first-being-malaysian-is-given.html

The writer provide an excellent answer why Malay first. Do read.

A little excerpt of the article -

.....the Malays (and later on added with Bumiputera following the inception of Malaysia) are specifically mentioned to define the nature of the new nation. It was meant to establish the fact that then Malaya and Malaysia is a nation formed on the basis of Malay being the main and majority race, the national culture and language is Malay and that the Rulers of the country (the Sultans, Raja and Agong) are Malays.

It is not about racial supremacy. It is about the concept of the ownership of the land (even though today many non Malays owned large tracts of land in the country). Hence it is called Malay-a or today Malay-sia and not anything else denoting some Chineseness or Indianness.

That is the context; all Malays are Malay first and Malaysian second. While the non-Malays may want to debate about who were the migrants and who were not, the underlying factor is that the Malays did not have to apply for citizenship while the non-Malays did.

In other words, in so far as Malays in Malaysia are concerned, they need not have to prove that they are Malaysians. Being a Malay means that being Malaysian is a given.
But it is not so for the migrants then as they have to prove themselves to be Malaysia first before they can obtain they citizenship.....

VIVA MALAYSIA!
